Artist Biography

Amanda Channells (Rakicic) from Coffs Harbour first began working with clay in 1999 and was immediately hooked.  Amanda attended private classes for some years before enrolling in formal tertiary studies where she continues to develop new techniques to enhance her style.  During this time Amanda obtained the Bachelor of Human Services at Southern Cross University, Australia.

Amanda has a visual impairment which prevents her from doing things that others take for granted and as such has had to develop a deeper understanding of the "feeling" of clay as its being thrown or built.  Many of her pieces are knocked off the wheel, bumped, scraped, scratched, dropped and otherwise ruined, usually at the final moment, however, this challenge only makes Amanda's determination stronger.  Amanda has worked with people with disabilities and disadvantaged families and developed groups which enhance their physical and mental wellbeing.

Amanda has developed  ceramic therapy groups in the community for people with a disability.  These groups display ones ability, enhance self confidence, enhance self awareness, allow people to gain independence, provide socialisation, encourage a feeling of achievement, enhance self worth and most importantly are lots of fun!  Amanda's aim is to positively impact on people's health and wellbeing.  From Amanda's own experience approaching lifestyle choices such as this in a more positive way can definitely promote physical, intellectual and emotional wellness.
